Well done to EOS‘ Fabian Alefeld and Ursa Major‘s Thomas Pomorski.

The transformation our generation is witnessing reaches well beyond the incremental mindset behind the “just-a-toolers” interpretation.

The tremendous opportunity for legacy and advanced Manufacturing technologies should be a key topic to discuss at IMTS – International Manufacturing Technology Show.

Original post by Fabian Alefeld:

We’re starting to see real, practical use cases for AI in additive manufacturing, with measurable impact.

One example is AI helping companies like Ursa Major accelerate R&D and process development efforts.

I recently spoke with Thomas Pomorski from Ursa Major on the Additive Snack Podcast, and he shared how their team is using Claude, Dyndrite, and AI coded tools to streamline DOE setup, iteration and build monitoring.

During our conversation, Thomas prompted Claude to write a new setup for a process parameter DOE, automatically apply it to test specimens, create support structures, slice the build, and load it onto the machine, all in under 20 minutes. Then we watched it print live on his AI coded dashboard.

In his own words, that means he can spend 5% of his day generating an additional day’s worth of output.

We of course also discussed Ursa Major’s programs and how they’re scaling advanced propulsion development, including:

  • Flying their 3D-printed Hadley engine on 9+ hypersonic missions
  • Completing successful Draper engine test flights
  • Building out a full solid rocket motor facility
