VALIMET, Inc., the U.S. Licensee of APWORKS Additive Manufacturing‘s Scalmalloy®, congratulates Sunrise Energy Metals on its intention to redomicile to US and pursue a primary listing on Nasdaq.
The news got out only hours ago (see below the link).
We agree that it’s Non-Obvious™ for a ‘mining company’ or project to target Nasdaq as its primary listing. However, the “what” and the “how” help explain the “why.”
What SUNRISE plans to mine: Scandium, an increasingly strategic Rare Earth.
Three key Applications:
1. In Li-ion batteries, Scandium can enhance Lithium-ion transport in both anode and cathode materials, while improving capacity retention and resistance to degradation during fast charge/discharge cycles.
2. In fuel cells, Scandium can enable high ionic conductivity, lower-temperature operation — reducing thermal stress and component wear — and higher power density.
3. For Aerospace, Defense, Motorsport parts, Scandium-Aluminum alloys offer a unique combination of light weight, strength, relatively high-temperature resistance, thermal conductivity, and fatigue resistance. (VALIMET is a manufacturer of both standard & proprietary Aluminum-Scandium alloy powders for AM, including Scalmalloy®).
It is therefore justified to consider domestic sourcing of Scandium a U.S. strategic priority.
How SUNRISE deploys its go-to-market strategy: adding downstream value.
1. They invested in a high-tech start-up, Agni Semiconductor (focused on high-speed, low-power non-volatile computer memory). Possibly a disruptor of data centers energy consumption, watch it closely. (https://lnkd.in/gn4rCrJ7)
2. They’re working on alloys qualification for the Additive Manufacturing process, strengthening the supply chain for Space, Defense and other applications.
In particular, Sunrise joined the team of companies that was awarded by America Makes a significant grant to generate and share among several Primes printing parameters & validation data of Sc-Al alloy printed parts (the GOTHAAM project).
We look forward to seeing Sunrise successfully execute this strategy.
Making Scandium less “Rare” is a request coming from Defense, Aerospace, and Energy sectors.
A successful Sunrise project would further strengthen a developing Western Scandium Industry Network that already includes Rio Tinto, the established North American producer, with additional resources in Australia.
Our congratulations for these bold steps forward go to Sam Riggall, Lynden Polonsky, David Petitjean, Timothy Langan.
Three of them already visited VALIMET – the fourth got an invitation.
Let me conclude saying that dining with Lynden in Melbourne was a true pleasure – a great host who works on big, big things.
