The spotlight on Scandium-Aluminum alloy powders drives two parallel activities, here at VALIMET, Inc.: exploring Scandium sources; being part of the conversation on new Alloy developments.
Sunrise Energy Metals is a strong partner in these efforts.
We received two special visitors: Timothy Langan, first class metallurgist, and David Petitjean, VP Sales and Marketing.
It was an intensive meeting with our Technology Manager, Dr. Ian McCarthy, our Materials and Process engineering Manager, Dr. Dustin Hickman and Yours Truly.
The opportunity for Advanced Manufacturing to leverage the unique properties of Scandium-Aluminum systems is evident in Defense, Space, and even Aeronautics. It’s morphing into an imperative.
The development of new alloys and the validation of the existing ones, including the renown Scalmalloy® by APWORKS Additive Manufacturing, is progressing: you may have heard of what Gränges Group recently introduced (https://www.epma.com/granges-pint-and-irt/), or about the alloy developed at Purdue University by Professor Xiaoming Wang (https://docs.lib.purdue.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=2470&context=open_access_theses), and you’ll here more from the GOTHAAM project, supported by America Makes.
We’d like to send this message the Industry: the time is now.
New alloys are being developed while domestic Scandium is on its way to becoming available at industrial scale, from multiple sources.
One wins, all win – it’s how we see it, here in California.
We and our partners are actually enjoying the ride. Last month, Sunrise CFO Lynden Polonsky hosted me for an Australian wine tasting.
We had to return the favor by taking our guests to a favorite vineyard that’s near our plant, to enjoy the golden hour: Californian Zinfandel for all.
Here’s the point: working to favor the widespread adoption of a metallurgical solution is ultimately, and utterly, a great purpose for metallurgists.
The pleasure of making things happen, and the camaraderie that comes with it, are worth celebrating.
If you’re a stakeholder in this emerging Industry network, I cordially invite you to keep close contact with us at VALIMET and follow our news.
Cheers,
Luigi Alzati
